As part of the experiment on illustrating how non-verbal communication is utilized by people to express their feelings and opinions, I decided to shop on a high-end retail store wearing only a pair of shorts, a pair of rubber slippers, and a loose shirt that is already worn at the neckline. The retail store, which we shall name as XY store, sells women's clothing apparel, lingerie, and accessories. I am experimenting on the assumption that sales people, especially those who are working on high-end retail stores, tend to discriminate their shoppers based on their physical appearance. Shoppers who wear the appropriate dress code for these high-end retail stores (classy and expensive clothing, usually formal or fashionable ones) are identified as 'real' shoppers, while those who do not conform to this dress code (such as what I was wearing at the time) are considered as either shoplifters or 'drifters,' people who just want to see and touch their merchandise, but do not have any intention or resources to buy these merchandise. More often than not, these non-conformist shoppers are regarded with suspicion, since they, for the sales people, do not have any business in the retail store: people who have the money to buy their products are the ones who can only enter in the store.
