�Once More to the Lake� is an essay written by E.B. White and it takes place at a lake in Maine. The author used to this lake every summer with his father and it was an amazing part of his life. So he decides to take his son there, and while he was there he starting having flashbacks of his past. He kept comparing these days with his past days with his father. He is trying to convince himself that he�s not getting old but in fact he contradicts himself while doing that and he now faces the truth in front of him, that he is getting older.

of time.�(white 569) and then continues to say,� the only difference-they had been to the movies and seen the pretty girls with the clean hair.�(white 569).he shows us that the only little change is that the waitresses were a bit cleaner than before ,now he is contradicting his saying of there being no time. Another time the author proves himself wrong when he talks about the boats and how before the lake used to always be calm. But now the new motor boats were louder and this got him irritated. He says, �the only thing that was wrong now, really, was the sound of the place, an unfamiliar nervous sound of the out board motors. This was the note that jarred, the one thing that sometimes would break the illusion.�(white 569). Now he admits that everything he is telling himself is just an illusion and time is passing by.
