What Do You Think - Stem Cell Research


When my first son was born 10 years ago stem cell research was a huge dilemma. As my pregnancy progressed the decision to save his cord blood was easy to us. My husband and I thought about his 13 year old brother who has Cystic Fibrosis and our own child who could become ill one day with a life threatening illness. His own stem cells (cord blood) could save his life, a future sibling, or family members.

Although I'm not exactly how I feel about embryonic stem cells, I totally agree with obtaining Adult stem cells to save another persons life or increase their quality of life. My belief in this comes from my childhood. ...

for storage. I don't mind paying it a bit because it gives me peace of mind that it is available if we would ever need it. I think I would also agree with the embryonic stem cell research if they could guarantee and prove that the stem cells used in research are left over from fertility clinics are going to be destroyed otherwise. However, I do not agree with a life being created for the sole purpose of using the embryonic stem cells for research or to specifically save another human being.

Upon research via the internet, I've learned that the embryonic stem cell debate could be close to over because of new breakthroughs. Scientists have learned how to stimulate a patient's own cells to behave like embryonic stem cells.
