Overcoming your Weaknesses

It's that awkward moment when your biggest weakness and the fear of losing someone so precious becomes excruciating. The speakers in "My last Duchess" by Robert Browning, "The Author to Her Book" by Anne Bradstreet, and "A Beautiful Girl Combs Her Hair" by Li Ho, all have a fear of losing someone or something. The speakers must face the challenges and attempt to overcome their fears.
The man in "My last Duchess" is beyond jealous-hearted. The Duke believes that his wife should be his only priority. He says "My gift of nine-hundred-year old name/with anybody's gift. Who'd stoop to blame ...

Like the man in "My last Duchess," the speaker in "The Author of Her Book," shows weakness. She talks negatively about herself and her work. She tells the reader, "Thou ill forms offspring of my feeble brain" (Bradstreet line 1). This shows she is very insecure about herself. It may be as if she is insecure because she is a woman. She announces, "If for they father asked, say thou had'st none,/And for thy Mother, she alas is poor" (Bradstreet lines 22-23). She feels she will be judged negatively because she is a woman. The speaker also hides her work. She says "Till snatched from thence by friends, less wise than true (Bradstreet line 3). She had others to show her work for her.
In "The beautiful Girl Combs Her Hair," the speaker also shows a weakness, but one of a different decent. The speaker is obsessed with this beautiful girl. He states, "fragrance of spilling hair/half sandalwood, half aloes (Ho lines 5-6). He is ...
