Advanced Practice Nursing

There are several roles that are at the disposal of the nurse who is aspiring to become an APN. The first is Clinical Nurse Specialist (Fitzpatrick, 2007). Here, the nurse specializes in the provision of a specific form of health care, for instance in the field of cancer or diabetes. Others are nurse mid-wives. These are the ones that specialize in providing advanced care in the field of midwifery. The third category is nurse anesthetist. A clinical nurse leader is the one who manages and leads other nurses in a unit.

Accountability

Being a nurse practitioner, I will be operating with relative autonomy. This means that I will not be operating under the supervision of a physician, as normally happens with other fields of nursing (Headley et al, 2008). Operating autonomously makes it necessary for me to hold myself accountable to all the actions that I am going to undertake. There will be no physician to hold me accountable.
