Personal Writing: My American Dream



I am from Nigeria, a country that is beautiful and filled with wonderful natural resources. I lived in Nigeria with my family, including my mother, father, three sisters and one brother. We were a happy family until social disorder and much unrest invaded my country. As a result, my family as well as other countrymen suffered. We did not have enough food and water--two staples that are necessary for anyone to survive. In addition, diseases and illness became epidemic, especially in the rural areas. very hard, and due to his effort, in March 1999 three of us joined him here in Washington, DC. Upon my arrival, I had to face challenges of language and different social customs, my accent made it difficult to communicate with others. I had to make new adaptations in order to excel in unfamiliar surrounding.
Even though I always looked forward to living the American dream, a place for opportunities, I knew that it was easy. I know I am an achiever because I have found within myself the mental and moral strength to pursue my dream in the face of hardship and pain. I have overcome that fear of making tough decisions of whether or not I will fit into unfamiliar surrounding in America. I know that courage is more than the absence of fear. It is the ability to go forward even when one is afraid to overcome fear and carry on.
