Personal Writing: My Dog Oso


Oso was old. The joints in her limbs were stiff, so she didn�t walk very fast. She had, during the last few years, become hard of hearing, and had to be summoned to her meals by the flicking of the porch lights, on and off, to get her attention. Yet, she just kept trucking along, happy as can be.
I adored that dog, and being a child, I believed that I would always be able to press my face against her long black hair, taking comfort in the warmth of her body, feeling her chest rise with every laboured breath. I always thought she would be in my life. No one could ever tell me otherwise, or could have prepared me for the inevitable.

me to the corner store to buy candy and ice cream. At that time I was delighted, as the trip to the corner store was an epic journey, which I had never taken on foot, only by car. I did not notice or care that Jake, normally tyrannical, dictatorial, and abusive, was being unusually nice to me that day
Well, after the saga of the corner store ended, I was seated by my mother, who gently, nicely, and calmly told me that, Oso, after 16 years, was dead.
I knew what death was, my grandfather had just passed on that same month. I just did not realise the exact implications of it. I asked my mother to do what all mothers do best and explain (parents have all the answers).
My mother very cautiously explained, �Oso was old...and eventually when animals or people get older, their bodies stop working and they die. They no longer move around and their spirit goes to heaven, where we, on earth can�t see them until we get to heaven.�
