Capital punishment should be used more often in our jails across the nation. The rate for capital punishment has been steadily decreasing and therefore life imprisonment has been the more frequently used punishment for crimes such as murder (McAnay 124). If used appropriately, the death penalty could be a great success because it could teach people that the murderous crime(s) committed by a person is wrong and that the country will no longer tolerate such acts of violence (Bedau).

Moreover, it is important to keep in mind that laws do change as do parole boards and people eventually forget the past. Life imprisonment lets the murderer live and as long as the person is alive, there is always a chance, no matter how slight, that he will strike again. Take for instance the case of James Moore who raped and strangled 14-year-old Pamela Moss in 1962. Her parents decided to save Moore from the death penalty on the condition that he be sentenced to life in prison without parole. However, thanks to a change in sentencing laws in 1982, James Moore is eligible for parole every two years!
