Many phans think �s story begins at Nectar�s but their start can be traced back to the student lounges of the University of Vermont�s Redstone campus. Here is were freshman, Ernest Anastasio III (Trey) met sophomore, Jeff Holdsworth. They discovered that they had similar music tastes which include bands such as the Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, and Pat Metheny. More important, they both loved to play their guitars. Trey played the drums for many years but he fell in love with the guitar when he started in the eleventh grade. Jeff had more experience with the guitar because he was taught by an instructor. Fish taught himself how to play the drums by locking himself in his room and trying to copy the sound of bands such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. When he moved to college, he started to move toward jazz and hardcore. Now, all they needed was a bass player. The three placed flyers all over campus and the first replay was Mike Gordon which joined the band soon after. Unlike Fish, Mike received formal training from a bass instructor. On the other hand, he did lock himself in his room just as Fish. Mike had a huge black box hung from the ceiling that he would enter when he practiced. That would enable him to concentrate on music without any visual stimulation to interfere with his experience. There is also a good friend a Trey�s named Tom Marshall that became the source and inspiration for some of Trey�s music.
