A man lies on the ground screaming in pain. Others around him get
the shaman or medicine man. The shaman calmly walks up to the man with a
few things in his arm. Among them are needles made from thorns, threads
from vines to sew up the man's wounds, and the last thing brought was witch
hazel to control the bleeding. That is a situation men or women would be
in if they were wounded many years ago. But even now some cultures don't
depend on hospitals or doctors with degrees in medicine to cure them; they
believe in the supernatural powers of the shaman and plants around them for
cures.

medicine man usually wears the mask to inspire fear and belief. Australian
Aboriginal groups have initiation rites, that can involve pulling teeth,
bloodletting, or burning and scaring of the body. Then, ointments and
balms made from herbs and other substances would be applied after the
ceremony.
The shaman have different uses for different kinds of plants. The
squawroot also know as the multipurpose plant is a traditional remedy in
some North American Tribes. It eases nerve and muscle pain, arthritis,
headaches, cramps and other muscle spasms, asthma, and it also reduces
swelling and soreness in the throat. Most of the time just the dried roots
and underground stems are used. In South America chewing coca leaves was a
way of starving off hunger, exhaustion, and numbing pain and fatigue.
