Political Process Of Early 1800�s



In The early 1800�s, the political process took drastic changes. Before, it was only �the wealthy and aristocratic white males who had say in the election of our president� (D boals) but that soon changed. In this essay, I will address three major issues. The voting bracket, the process of voting, and nominating the candidates who were to run.
Before this change in government policy, only wealthy landowners were allowed to vote. This angered many people who did not own enough land but felt that they deserved a voice in the election of their president. The voting process from the beginning of this country was a horrible thing. It started off with people saying in front of their peers which candidate they were voting for. This made peer pressure a great influence in the voting process. �Vote for the wrong person, get beaten� (that was you, Wood.) Most states changed over to a written ballot where the voter had to write the names of fifteen electors on the ballot. Now this would turn off most voters today and we all write on a daily basis. Think of what people in the early 1800�s who were mostly illiterate must have thought. Most of them couldn�t vote even if they wanted to. Then came the already printed ballots. A far cry from the do it yourself ballots but the politicians of course tainted the process. They colored their own cards so that they could know who was voting for them and who wasn�t.
