Pride and Prejudice opens in the home of an English family, the Bennets, in the eighteenth century. As the story unfolds we find out that Charles Bingley, a rich, young, single gentleman is moving into Netherfield, near the Bennets. Mrs. Bennet decides that he will marry one of her five daughters. The daughters meet Bingley at the Meryton ball. Accompanying him to the ball is another young gentleman, his two sisters, and the eldest sister�s husband. The young gentleman is Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy who seems quite disagreeable on first impressions. than expected due to her ill health. Jane is soon better and the next event takes the daughters to another ball and another chance for Elizabeth to confirm Bingley�s affections for Jane. During the ball, Darcy asks her to dance, she refuses his hand and tries to be cordial in displaying her dislike for him.
Mr. Bennet receives a letter from his cousin, Mr. Collins who wishes to come and visit his family. Here Mr. and Mrs. Bennet show their dislike for the system that will give Mr. Collins the estate of Mr. Bennet, and leave his wife and five daughters with nothing. It thus becomes evident why Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are so eager to have their daughters married well. Mr. Collins� letter hints at his wanting to marry one of their daughters, in order to repay Mr. Bennet for his bequeathing of his estate. By doing this they convince him to stay the winter there, away from Jane. By Christmas time, Jane is still upset at Bingley�s sudden removal from Netherfield.
