Pride and Prejudice is a love story set in the beginning of the nineteenth century. A significant part of the novel takes place in the countryside of England, mainly at Longbourn, the home of the Bennet family. The main protagonist, Elizabeth, and her four sisters are the daughters of a smart but irresponsible country gentleman and his common wife. Elizabeth is a very sharp girl but her strong opinions and judgments sometimes misguide her. The other lead character is a young aristocrat named Fitzwilliam Darcy, who appears to be flawed by excessive pride. when falling in love with an aristocrat who has to overcome his own pride in order for his true integrity to shine through. Elizabeth is an exceptional, amusing and outspoken twenty-one year old girl who disagrees with many of the social views of her contemporaries. Elizabeth feels that marriages should be based on love, not on the financial or social benefits that it might yield. Because of this belief, Elizabeth refuses a marriage proposal from Mr. Collins, her father�s cousin who will someday inherit the Longbourn estate. When Collins later asks Elizabeth�s girlfriend Charlotte to marry him, she accepts his proposal. Elizabeth is astonished, horrified and disappointed by her friend's behavior because she knows that Charlotte does not love him. But Charlotte is more practical in her thinking than Lizzy.
