Prison Issues

There are many issues facing prisons in the United States today and most of these things do not have very clear and simple solutions. Some of the issues are more researched than others and many are hard to research because of a lack of accurate information and reporting of statistics. Some of these problems are overcrowding, AIDS, and pregnancy among inmates.
One of the most well-known problems facing prisons today is the issue of overcrowding. According to the Bureau for Justice Statistics in 1980 there were 139 inmates per 100,000 residents and 502 inmates per 100,000 residents in 2009; this is an increase of 261%. Another problem facing prisons today is prevalence of AIDS. According to the US department of Justice's bureau of justice statistics there were 21,987 HIV positive inmates in 2008 and the HIV infection rate is nearly five times that of the general non prison population. While the spread of AIDS to incarcerated inmates is a problem, an even bigger problem is what can happen when the inmates are released back into society as 95% of inmates are eventually released. According to the blue ribbon commission on safety and abuse in America's prisons there are more than 1.5 million inmates released each year carrying life threatening contagious diseases and some prisons with as many as 5,000 inmates have only two or three doctors.
