Phase 3 is called the Secure Base Behavior. Bowlby thought that at the age of six months, the baby forms a pure attachment. They now feel safe. At the age of seven months the baby will start to experience stranger and separation anxiety. This will not go away until the baby is about a year and half. The child will get upset when parent tries to leave. They get upset because they think that the parent will not come back. If a stranger walks into to the room, the child will cling onto the parent. Often the child will look at caregiver to make sure that it is ok.

When the mother walks out of the room, the child will usually cry. When the child is alone they will usually cry. If the child tries to avoid contact with the mother or the child treats the mother like she is a stranger then the attachment style is insecure avoidant. If the mother tries to approach the child, the child will start to walk toward the mother but then turn away. Then the attachment style is insecure ambivalent.
