Films are depiction of human emotions, and the films that get popular or are greatly appreciated, achieves the feat, not only through excellence in technology and cinematography - but essentially because of the manner in which they show their characters interact with each other - be it during wars, catastrophes or common day to day family relationships.

Qui Ju is one such film - filled with sentiments and changing attitudes of its characters. Directed by Zhang Yimou, the movie is basically an amalgam of comedy and drama in a politic backdrop (Stone). But in this story, a peasant woman, who is pregnant as well, is virtually rowing upstream to get an apology from a local chief who had hit her husband in groin (Ebert). Set in a rural environment, the movie takes its viewers to a journey along with Qui Ju, which at times seems like a travelogue through the social and justice quarters of China. Qui Ju (the movie) at first might seem like a typical feminist story but it is not. Although, the actress Gong Li (Qui Ju) is in the center-stage of the movie - she is not an archetypal woman who would argue against male chauvinism and give speeches to ignite freedom movement in rural china. On the other hand, she remains sober, never shows temper, but at the same time, there's no denying to the fact that she never gets budged by legal setbacks and seeks higher courts of appeal to take her case to.
