Co-60. Gamma and beta radiation rays were measured using the Geiger counter and also the absorption rates of lead (Pb). Comparisons between different thicknesses of lead and how different thicknesses affected the number of counts recorded on the Geiger counter were also seen to confirm the theory. It was hypothesized that the radioactive particle counts will decrease as the numbers of lead layers were added. Using the GM counter the hypothesis was supported with the absorption rates of Pb against Sr-90 (β-particle). The data showed that there were 176 confirmed counts without shielding and 76 counts with one layer of lead shielding, over a time interval of 30 seconds. The value decreased with each extra layer of lead shielding added. Cobalt-60 also showed comparable results.
