Ralph Waldo Emerson was one of America's most influential authors and thinkers. In the 19th century, his writings were considered dangerous and revolutionary. Emerson taught that each man must think for himself and he also believed in the concept of the oversoul. He wanted to find a way to express a modern relationship between man and God. In my opinion, Emerson is a good influence on the modern world and a reading of Emerson would be good for society.
Emerson's teachings were somewhat controversial in the 19th century. He supported the pantheist view that since Christ is divine then all men are divine.

know it including humans, animals and everything that exists. This leads to further prove that we are divine, seeing as we are part of God and God is divine. Again this thought was very criticized because God was always thought to be a separate entity and Emerson suggests that we are part of him. Again this causes a lot of controversy and these types of theories and beliefs is what caused the world to look at Emerson as a menace and a revolutionary.

In our present society I would like to think that there is such a thing as freedom of expression. This would in turn had given Emerson the liberty to say what he wished without fear of being persecuted. His teachings are in my opinion ultimately good for society today. It actually makes people believe that they are important in this world and that they are part of something a lot bigger than themselves.
