Ralph Waldo Emerson�s �Self-Reliance� is a wonderfully written essay that gives many definitions of what one�s self is about. With many definitions to define self-reliance it could give the reader so many new positive ideas about how to change and better their life. The most significant strength of the essay is it�s spiritual and honest definitions about what the self really is and the details in which it has to explain further in-depth. The most significant weakness it has is that not all readers know who the great philosophers and leaders are that are mentioned or if there are any references. insane to seek advice from someone who is a �go-between� themselves and God. One could run into a false prophet and be headed the wrong direction in life. I believe that it is an important part of life�s education. Whether the pupil is young or old, they should learn the gospel, learn right from wrong, and live by it. God�s word should be understood and believed and the people should have faith in him, that he will take care of his people.
The main weakness of the essay is that there aren�t any explanations of who people are or if Emerson had any relevant sources included in the essay. A reader could start reading the essay and not have an association with �Moses, Plato, and Milton� (19) or �David, Jeremiah, or Paul (29). It would be easier reading if there were footnotes explaining who the people were instead of having to go to other sources every time one is named.
