Raw Deal: Film Techniques


Watching a film is easy, but actually analyzing it can be very difficult. When most people watch films they do not pay attention to the different technical properties that go into making a film. Raw Deal, which was directed by Anthony Mann in 1948, is a classic example of film noir, which focuses on organized crime and the gangster scene in the forties and fifties. Raw Deal uses numerous technical aspects to enhance certain scenes or characters. Three properties that stood out in my mind were the use of lighting, cinematic points of view, and voice-over narration.

An example of this is the use of front-lighting and back-lighting in the scene on the boat where Joe is talking to Pat about their new married life. The camera focuses on a side view of Pat�s face. There is a light shining from the window behind her, directly pointing at the clock hanging on the wall to her left. There is also a light shining directly in her face and the rest of her surroundings are dark. The use of these lights creates horizontal lines, which go from the bottom of the clock past her face. A shadow is also cast from the clock in the opposite direction and the light coming from the window lights the wall behind the clock, making it stand out.
