The author writes that she was eight years old on her last visit to her father. By then she'd had two full years, maybe three, on the school ground. She'd seen first hand that in her "real world" the weakest were always attacked and picked on. She'd seen, by then, that there was safety in numbers, and the safest place to be was in the larger group. While she was able to understand that at the age of eight, what she couldn't do was stand up to "the group," or in this case those who criticized her father.
Instead she joined them. Her description of her last visit to her father -- with the overgrown backyard, her father emaciated in mussed and wrinkled clothing -- was very vivid.
