Religion in the Middle Ages

The Church was the center of the lives of all Medieval people----peasants, serfs, nobles, and even kings. Christianity, the only recognized religion of the Middle Ages, refers to the religious beliefs taught by Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church was the only recognized church during the Middle Ages in Europe, and it made its own laws and controlled large amounts of money. People had heard of other religions, and there were European followers of Judaism and Islam. However, non-Christians were considered �infidels� and were not to be trusted (�Middle Ages Religion� 1).

Changes in the seasons controlled the lives of the people in the Middle Ages. Each season had its own religious festival or feast. These religious festivals gave the rural people a time of rest and entertainment. The people religiously celebrated these festivals because it was a good excuse for a holiday from hard work. Each month was filled with at least one feast or festival of celebration. The people of the Middle Ages celebrated Twelfth Night, St. Valentine�s Day, Easter, All Fool�s Day, and many other holidays that have carried over to modern times (�Religious Festivals� 1).
Many of the clergy lived in religious communes in isolation from the common people. These religious communities were the lifetime home of many men and women, who dedicated their lives to service. The men lived in monasteries and lived lives of self-denial. St. Benedict wrote the rules for monasteries in the sixth century.
