Nine Parts of Desire by Geraldine Brooks

In journalist Geraldine Brooks' first book - published in 1995, well after the Gulf War - she tries hard to get past the mysteries and misunderstandings, and into the truths of Islamic women. For the most part, Brooks' effort is laudable and informative, albeit her narrative often takes a condescending tone. But perhaps her tone - she's a native of Australia - is not unlike attitudes shown by most Western citizens towards Islam. And also, it's possible her tone is justified, given the cruelty many Islamic women and girls must endure. So, Brooks goes on, "I...argued with her that it made no reference at all to covering hair." How much success will a Western woman have arguing with an Islamic woman about a veil and its purpose? Not much. But, apparently Brooks put that in her book to show readers she actually went to the Middle East and put on a show of interrogative chutzpah. Meantime, still investigating the veil issue (page 22), Brooks writes that "where women wore the veil, there was money to be made in Islamic fashion," and she points to a three-floor clothing emporium in Cairo "that stocked nothing but Islamically correct outfits" - and many of those veils "could run to three of four times a civil servant's monthly salary." Readers easily get the gist of the paradox: poverty vs. cultural obligation.
