One incident that had a great impact on 's life was something that occurred when he was young and beginning to learn the true ways of the white people. This is actually just one part of a series of events that opened his eyes what was going on between races in the South.
At this point Wright had begun a job as a porter in a clothing store which opened up the chance for his first real racially biased encounters. First of all in the store itself the owner and his son openly mistreated negro customers by slapping, kicking, and pushing them in front of Richard. One of the men asked him about the problem and supposedly being helpful, told him to hold on to the car for a ride. So Richard did, with one hand on the car and the other on the bike. The men were drinking and one of them offered him a drink from inside the window. Richard immediately thought about his unpleasant experiences as a six-year-old drinking alcohol and instinctively said, "Oh, no!" That was the nearly fatal mistake that he was sure to never make again. As soon as he said that without a sir, he was hit in on the head with an empty whiskey bottle and was sent crashing to the ground all entangled with his bike. The white men came rushed from the car with the intent to teach him a serious lesson. They approached him telling him to show respect towards whites, always say "sir" and so on.
