The short story Ripe Figs by Kate Chopin is set in Louisiana during the summer time. It follows a young girl name Babette who wants leave the house so she can see her cousins. However, her godmother Maman-Nainaine insist that she waits until the figs ripen. When they finally ripe, Babette is allowed to visit her cousins and learn that one must require a level of patience in order to achieve it. The theme of this story is that patience is a virtue that everyone needs to understand in order to achieve it.

But with Nainaine, she has learned how to patience; thus time appearing to have traveled faster.
The second element that demonstrates this theme is Babette's initial reaction for having to wait for the figs to ripen. When Nainaine says that Babetta has to wait till the figs ripen to go to her cousins, she grows impatient and goes out every day to see if the figs have ripened. As mentioned in this quote: "She walked slowly beneath them, carefully peering between the gnarled, spreading branches." Her reaction to having to wait shows that her youthfulness influenced how much patience she holds.
The third element that demonstrates this theme is how Babette is able to learn patience by waiting for the figs to ripen by the end of the story. Initially, she is impatient because she checks to see if the rigs have ripened ever so often. But she waits the entire day for the figs to ripen and then finds out that they are ready the next morning. She then waits patiently for her ...
