made many contributions to the American economy. Fulton was the American inventor who brought steamboating from its mere experimental stage to its complete and successful stage.
Fulton was born on Nov. 14, 1765 in Lancaster County, P.A. He was the son of Irish immigrants. He and his family moved to America the loss of an unproductive farm which they had lost by mortgage foreclosure in 1771, and also his father had died. Fulton had not from the beginning been a successful inventor. He only started out as an apprentice in a Philadelphia jewelry shop. He thought of things such as aqueducts for valley crossings, boats for specialized cargo, and bridge designs featuring bowstring beams to transmit only vertical loads to the piers. Although some of his bridge designs were used to build bridges in the British isles, his ideas for building canals were not accepted.
Then in 1801 Fulton meet a man by the name of Robert R. Livingston. The two men decided to share the expense of building a steamboat in Paris using Fulton�s idea. It was a side paddlewheel boat, sixty six foot long boat, with an eight horsepower engine. In London, Fulton advanced his ideas and mad a submersible and low lying craft which the British would use to carry explosives in an attack, one which was used in attacks to France.
