In The Rocking Horse Winner DH Lawrence uses symbolism to portray the family�s materialism and the boys desire to please his mom. The voices in the house symbolize the materialistic view that the family has by wanting more and more money, become more avaricious as Paul earns more money for his mother. The rocking horse seems to represent Paul�s desire to please his mom by riding it until in frenzy so that he can win money for his mother.
The family lives above what their income allows them to live for according to the boy�s mother. She says that since neither her nor her husband have any money they are unlucky and that it is better to be born lucky than rich. This ...

The boy would even go into a frenzy so that he would be able to figure out the name of the winning horse. Also the boy wanted to be lucky because of what his mother said to him and he demanded that the rocking horse �take [him] where there is luck� so that he could please his mother.
In conclusion, Lawrence uses symbolism to portray the family�s greed and materialism and the boys desire to please his mother.
