Tacitus, in his seminal, anthropological work, "Germania" provided a comprehensive, ethnographic treatise on the people of pre-medieval Germany. This work, created a little less than two millennia ago, explores the geography, ethnicity, occupations, culture, lifestyle and the role of women in that society. "Germania" is important because Tacitus maintains objectivity throughout the work: he criticizes some "barbaric" lifestyles-the resorting to war, sometimes just to procure food, instead of agriculture or more sedate occupations; on the other hand, Tacitus also praises some of the cultural mores of the Germanic people.
