Romanticm in Frankenstein

Mary Shelley�s Frankenstein is typically thought of as a graphic horror novel in which Dr. Frankenstein�s evil monster terrorizes his family and close friends, and is rarely thought of as a romance novel. I do not argue that the text should be transferred from its current category of a gothic novel to that of romance, I do however believe that the story displays several instances of romanticism that should be considered. Among them, and the most obvious example, would be the mutual love shared between Frankenstein and Elizabeth. friend, that I love you, and that in my airy dreams of futurity you have been my constant friend and companion� (p.161-2). I believe that this portrays Elizabeth�s true feelings towards Victor, and that the love she posses is as ever strong as his. In receiving this letter, Frankenstein�s fierce love is re-established when he proclaims, �Sweet and beloved Elizabeth! I read and re-read her letter, and some softened feelings stole into my heart� (p. 162). I believe that these comments paint an accurate picture of the love shared between these two individuals.
Two other examples of romanticism shown are the fascination with nature and the monster�s search to find companionship. Throughout the novel, Mary Shelley uses great description when illustrated the views of the mountains, forests, lakes and seas.
