Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

In Tom Stoppard�s work, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead Shakespeare�s play, Hamlet, is constantly used, not only as a backdrop for the story, but also as the object of Stoppard�s critique. Quickly reading through the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead the reader realizes that Stoppard expects the reader to have read Hamlet, because he leaves many blanks to be filled, and also dialogue taken is directly from Hamlet at many points. It is not until the second read through (at least for this student) that the reader realizes that Stoppard brings about the absurd qualities of Hamlet in almost a critique of the bizarre qualities of Shakespeare�s writings.
