due to the shear intensity of the competition, musicians were charged with the task of finding and creating marketable products for the respective firm with little or no capital to start with. At the same time, Puerto Ricans, both in New York and Puerto Rico were facing social turmoil. Those in New York faced the social dilemma of finding for themselves an identity that belonged to them as barrios and those in Puerto Rico were trying to fight for a stable political system. Hence, the development of the salsa style of music was invariably in the social context of public unrest, disparity, and a great sense of injustice and inequality.
