53 minutes, people are protesting to the army, there is someone shout the slogan, and then everybody follow and dance. This is a Toyi Toyi dance. People need justice and freedom, they want Mandela to be released, the condition of the jail which Mandela lives is very bad. During the protest, people burning the school and have conflict with the army.

First of all, the movie shows the characteristic of South African singing. In the very begining dance of the film, students singing "sarafina" (which is a short term, just like mbube) repeatly, and there are harmony combined with both male and female voice. Secondly is the dancing. The dance start from about the 11 minutes of the movie, which teacher Mary and student are at the playground.
