There's no doubt about it; the author of the editorial "Shop Smart, Students," is right. College students do pay a lot of money for textbooks. It is a terrific financial burden. According to the author, textbooks can cost a student up to $800 a year, and when the student is working at minimum wage and/or borrowing money to pay for them, that's a lot of burgers and French fries served up. Students are as entitled to value for their money spent as any other group.

like an isolated incident, not something upon which a student should base important educational decisions.
But the author goes further, suggesting that students order books overseas. He offers no real data to demonstrate that there would be any significant savings once shipping costs were paid. Books are heavy, and unless the books were sent by air, they might not even arrive in time for the start of class. The value of saving a few dollars after shipping has to be weighed against the books after class has started.
He has other suggestions, such as making the books available to be checked out instead of bought. This would add a new level of tasks for the university, which would then be reflected in tuition rates, leaving the reader wondering if it would really save students much money.
