The Second Amendment of the constitution gives citizens the right to bear arms, and is therefore the most important law of the nation. The Second Amendment, one of the ten amendments in the Bill of Rights, was written in 1789. During the time that Britain was in control of the colonies, only the military or police could own weapons. In the state of Oklahoma it is illegal for a convicted felon to own a firearm. Statistic, show that convicted felons, after getting out of jail will repeat violent crimes. With that said, society would be encouraging the felons to commit more crimes if they are allowed to have a firearm. Without the Second Amendment we wouldn�t be able to protect our families and homes from burglars. From one point of view it�s better if every home in America is protected by at least one good shotgun.
The problem is that firearms have been with this nation from the beginning. In fact, Congress at that time did not even feel it necessary to put an Amendment in the Constitution because having a firearm was as common as riding a horse. �This right has not been questioned, for it was viewed as a traditional privilege lying outside the Constitution. . .� (Hook, p30).
