Many people do not think about sign language until they encounter a deaf or hard of hearing person or they see another person signing. It is common for a person to be born deaf. According to the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), one out of ten children who are born deaf is born to parents who hear. The common person knows the history of the beginning of the Unites States of America, but do they know much about where sign language originated?

Gallaudet was a minister who became interested in helping his neighbor's young daughter.
