In the book, Single Women in European Past, there are a number of essays that deal with topics of single women such as, relationships, economic issues and employment opportunities facing them, differences between widows and single women, and also slavery. Also Wiesner writes that such restrictions were gradually expanded to include the daughters of citizens. They were also forbidden to �have their own smoke� or �earn their own bread� (pg. 197). Wiesner is trying to show that these women who were single were treated as if they were not human beings in their society just because of society�s attitudes towards them. They especially did not have the same independence and freedom that men had in Germany. Men were always seen as superior to women.
Another thing that Wiesner writes about is the domestic service women took part in and how the society viewed them and the effects it had on domestic service women.
