Alcohol, probably the oldest drug known, has been used at least since the earliest records exist. Out of the many numerous types of alcohol, ethyl alcohol is the one consumed in drinking. People drink Alcohol in three main beverages, these are, beer, which contains 3% to 8% alcohol, wines, which contain 8% to 12% alcohol, and distilled beverages, such as whisky or vodka, which contain 40% to 50% alcohol. Drinkers may become addicted to any of these.

The kidneys pass small amounts of alcohol and through urine, and even smaller amounts processed through the lungs and breath, most alcohol is metabolized through the liver. The body metabolizes alcohol about the rate of one ounce of whisky per hour. Most people, however, drink faster then this, and so the concentration of alcohol in the blood keeps rising.

Moderate use of alcohol is not harmful, but excessive or heavy drinking is associated with alcoholism and numerous other health problems. The effects of excessive drinking becomes evident on major organ systems of the body after continuous drinking of a period of time the may range from 5 to 30 years. Parts of the body most effected by heavy drinking are the digestive and nervous system.
