Sri Lanka�s path as a modern, independent nation has been long tarnished by?almost continual political violence. Governments have faced?pressure from the Sinhalese majority not to make concessions to the?Tamil minority; Tamils have stressed for more autonomy. The Singhalese make up the majority of Sri Lanka and are mostly Buddhist while the Tamil minority are mostly hindu.
