Going through a stressful situation can be enough to drive you mad, but when you go through stress over a long period time, it can cause actual physical harm. While stressed, the sympathetic part of the nervous system initiates a 'fight or flight' reaction, which helps us deal with stressful situations. After the danger has passed, the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system picks up, which decreases heartbeat and relaxes blood vessels. Stress can also cause Gastric Ulcers, which are areas in the gastrointestinal tract which are highly acidic and very painful. Ulcers happen when gastric acids start to erode the stomach lining. Stress has been known to increase production of gastric acids, which overproduction can cause these painful ulcers.
Stress can also cause Erectile Dysfunction. Erections rely on the sympathetic section of the nervous system, but due to stress, things can go awry and you could switch from sympathetic to parasympathetic, which could lead to either loss of erection or premature ejaculation (or both). Blood pressure can also be a factor in this situation. (Conforth, 2010)
