Tale of Two Cities Essay

Throughout the novel A Tale of Two Cities, the theme of resurrection is a powerful and binding force that gives insight into the lives of Dickens� characters. According to Albert Guerard, �In the battle of good versus evil�good tends to resurrect or be resurrected, while the forces of evil mimic or parody the resurrection or parody the resurrection theme.� (qtd. in �The Triumph of the Novel: Dickens� 2) While characters both have good and evil sides, Dickens focuses on their individual ability to �resurrect� and for some, resurrection is impossible. Dickens uses the theme of resurrection to demonstrate that the lives of all people center upon the hope of rebirth and redemption.

This paradox is even more evident when Jerry Cruncher�s son exclaims �Of father, I should so like to be a Resurrection-Man when I�m quite growed up.�(163) While Cruncher�s son believes his father is performing noble and brave deeds, the reader knows that this is not the case. By calling himself �Resurrection-Man�, Cruncher parodies the theme by bringing honor and pride to a disdained profession. However, Dickens does show the true extent of resurrection when Cruncher promises that he will �go into that line of reg�lar diggin� and make amends for what he would have un-dug.�(306) The ability for a man such as Cruncher to �resurrect� exemplifies the ability and scope of resurrection to the most unlikely people.
