Tempting Fruits: A Comparative Analysis Of Alicante And This Is Just To Say



Stating the obvious, the both poems mention fruits. In Alicante, the persona mentions an orange while in This is just to Say, the persona mentions plums. What do these fruits have in connection with the poem? Are they just mere objects in the poem or do they have a deeper meaning?
The two poems essentially talk about the same thing. They both have sexual connotations. Although the personas of Alicante and This is Just to Say are not really stated, it may be safe to deduce that they are male. They are male having sexual relations with a woman. Of course, it can also be the other way around but it is more logical in these poems that the personas are men.

the plums were eaten already by the persona. It was not offered to the persona during that time. It was not supposed to be eaten at that instant. The sexual relation in this poem was not obviously stated. It would seem that the poem was just stating a situation in which the persona ate cold, delicious plums placed in an icebox that were not supposed to be eaten because it was probably for breakfast. There was no warmth mentioned in the poem, only the how the plums were so cold.

Going deeper, the two poems are essentially different in the willingness of the woman participating in the sexual act. In Alicante, the woman is a willing participant. She even gave him an orange as a present. She herself was a present. However in the other poem, the woman was not supposed to give herself to the man. But the persona found her too tempting to resist that even if she was cold, he �ate� her. The woman was saving herself for breakfast. It could mean she was saving herself for another time or ...
