Texting while driving has become a daily distraction for teenage drivers hooked on instant communication. It is a menace to everyone on the road.A new poll by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety showed that 87 percent of Americans regarded texting or e-mailing while driving as a "very serious" safety hazard, yet 1 out of 5 drivers acknowledged having done so, and half of the drivers were 16 to 24. The most effective way to reduce this danger is to pass and enforce an anti-texting law so that the millions of people who know better will be less likely to be tempted to put themselves and others at risk. Teens have less road experience than adults, so teens are more likely to underestimate how dangerous these types of distractions really are. Because teens have driven while texting in the past with no consequences, and because teens often believe themselves to be invincible, they are likely to generalize this experience into a belief that this behavior is without risk. Their lack of experience means they are less able to anticipate the actions and reactions of other drivers, so they actually need to be more, rather than less, attentive while driving. Real dangers exist on the roads, and teens who choose to engage in behaviors such as texting while driving only increase their risk. Many teens are choosing to do so, perhaps due to their lack of driving experience and their lack of awareness of just how distracting text messaging while driving can be.
