suggests "the Black Death was caused by an infection in the air or water" (Venette 379). As a result of his theory, the Jews were charged for infecting wells and the air. Many Christians burned and killed thousands of Jews for allegedly spreading the disease. Although it could be argued the disease traveled by air and water, the Black Death was actually transported by insects and rats (Black Death). The symptoms of the Black Death were swelling beneath the armpits and groins (Tura 380-1). The Black Death was fatal if one was diagnosed, as victims would simply fall over while talking. So many people died, large pits were dug and bodies were left to decay. As ditches would fill, more were dug and replenished with additional corpses (Tura 381).
Anyone was vulnerable to the plague. Although the plaque did spread across large areas of land, cities and suburbs were likely destinations the Black Death would visit and pass because of dense populations. For example, 80,000 people ...
