Abstract

The Persian Gulf War, also known as Operation Desert Storm, was a complex cultural event that effected everyone involved. It was an event that began with a claim to power and an invasion. It tested the world leaders as to the policing actions needed to keep troubled countries free. It set precedence for a new type of war; a war fought with technology as opposed to hand-to-hand combat. It sent a message to the world that tyrants would not win and would be dealt with accordingly. It changed the way a lot of American soldiers viewed their country and their beliefs.

around the Persian Gulf. My company landed in Saudi Arabia on an airstrip in the middle of the desert during the second week of December 1990. We were to be the communications support for the 3rd AD, which were the troops designated to enter Kuwait through the backdoor of Iraq.
This adventure began for me at the beginning of November. I was stationed in Heilbronn, Germany. A few of us were watching the only news channel available to try to understand what was happening in the Persian Gulf. It was announced that the 7th Corp would be immobilized quickly and sent in to the Gulf preparatory for war. We all knew that we were in an important brigade in the 7th Corp and that we would be sent as well. A week later, we were officially notified of the impending move. We were all overwhelmed with fear and anxiety. We knew that the cultural shock would be enormous and that there would be a good chance that we would not come back alive.
