"It was like I was bringing home the American culture to my parents everytime I learned something new in school," Wong recalls. "I remember bringing home the first permission slip to go on a field trip when I was in kindergarten. My parents couldn't get over the fact that field trips existed. They thought going to school meant staying at school and not leaving the playground. They weren't too happy about letting me go until my teacher explained to them that the field trip would be educational."
