The Disadvantages Of The South During The Civil War



In 1861 the United States was splitting apart. The South felt it was necessary to secede from the Union. There was no doubt that secession would provoke civil war. The South didn�t have many resources and had a lower population. There was the South�s weakness of Nationalism. The North had a more stable economy and strong leadership. The South never had a chance of winning the Civil War.
Lincoln implied at his inaugural that he had no intention of interfering with slavery and indicated he wouldn�t challenge the secession of the southern states with military force. He said that no state had the right to secede from the Union. Lincoln�s words were:

based around the institution of slavery. The North�s economy was more industrial. The North could supply their army with clothes, food, and firearms much easier than the South could. The North had more industries and supplies. The Union had approximately 1,300,000 industrial workers compared to the Confederacy�s 110,000. The North�s advantage would enhance as the civil war wore on. The South lacked the economy to sustain a lengthy civil war.
Besides the advantage of having more products, the North also had a higher taxation income. The North taxed its citizens over 23% of their income, whereas the South taxed a mere 17% of their citizens income. Thus the central government had more to use, and could therefore fight a better battle.
One of the South�s objective�s for creating their own government, was to give states more power than the central government. This was ironic, because a strong central government was what the South needed, if they planned on ...
