the many strange events that happen in the lifetime of Emily Grierson. Emily finds no man that can live up to the standards of her father and remains alone. After Emily's father dies she starts to show signs of mental illness and starts her pattern of shutting out the world. The only person that stays with her is a black man named Tobe, until a man by the name of Homer Barron comes to town for a sidewalk paving project. Everyone in the town was glad to see Emily taking a liking to this man even though he did not live up to the family's standards. Homer is seen entering Miss Emily's home and never coming back out. Miss Emily also never leaves the house again and is only seen in the windows from time to time. The day of her death the black man called her cousins over to show she had died and then without a word he disappears never to be seen again. After Miss Emily is laid to rest the people of the town finally have a chance to search the house, this is when they go upstairs ...
