In 1949, the Federal Communications Commission introduced the fairness doctrine as a way to regulate media content and to make sure that �stations [were not] simply [using airtime] as advocates with a singular perspective� (Limburg). The fairness doctrine mandated that each station must give multiple perspectives to every issue covered and must �actively seek out issues of importance to their community and air programming that addressed those issues� (Limburg). The regulations set forth in the doctrine were ultimately observed until the 1980�s when corporation owners began to feel that the regulations were stepping on the feet of capitalism and their profit-making potential by forcing television stations to air �unfavorable� view points.
