Wang Lung�s connection to the earth was a spiritual one. He depended on the earth for his livelihood. Because of this, he grew a spiritual link to the earth. If he grew tired while working, he would sleep on the ground and draw strength from the earth. When a massive drought came, and he had to leave his home, he yearned for his land. When a flood came, he couldn�t work his land, and had to find something else to occupy the void left by the absence of his work, and it could never satisfy him the way his land could. Every time, after being separated from his beloved land, when he returned to it, he was refreshed. It made him whole.

When a serious drought came, he had to abandon his land and travel in search of a way to feed his family. He and his family moved south, to a big city, where he found work. Although his family was fed, he still longed for his land. When he returned, he felt as though he had never been away from his land. He was happy to have returned.
Seven years after Wang Lung returned to his land after the drought, he had become wealthy compared to the other farmers in his village. He had workers, and someone to oversee them. That year, a major river flooded, and much of the area, including his fields, had become a lake. His house, however, was on a hill and avoided being reabsorbed into the land (it was made of earth).
