The Green Lantern: Gatsby

Across the lake, on Daisy�s dock, shines a green light. The image of the green light in the novel The Great Gatsby is a significant symbol which reflects Gatsby's version of the American dream and mainly Daisy who is beyond Gatsby's reach. Throughout the novel Fitzgerald uses many other images or symbols. At first, it may seem very simple, but when the symbol is closely studied, one may see the deeper meaning found within it. He also uses these symbols to make a point. He uses this point and converts it into a deeper meaning, both about longing for Daisy and, a myth about America. The green light is a light at the end of Daisy�s dock.

his world with a large house and moneys but with his future he saved a spot for Daisy. This absence in his life is tempted and partially filled by living just close enough to Daisy so that he might not feel the pain of a gaping hole in his life. At the end of Chapter One, Nick catches Jay with his arms outstretched towards the green light. At the time, however, it was not revealed to the reader that he was reaching for the dock, �he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward--and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. (Fitzgerald)
